 Partner for Surgery was founded by longtime Lutheran Church of the Redeemer McLean, Virginia members Frank and Todd Peterson.
The idea for Partner for Surgery came out of the 1998-2000 Peace Corps service of Todd, who saw surgical needs among his rural, isolated villagers. Todd sought out volunteer surgeons eager to help Guatemala’s most impoverished but lacking the means to reach them. Fourteen villagers were escorted to the doctors by Todd, operations were successful and the people returned home to become full participating members of their community. In 2000, Todd’s father, Frank, took early retirement to form Partner for Surgery as a full time volunteer. Since inception in 2001, Partner for Surgery has provided access to surgery to over 5,000 individuals and medical attention to over 25,000. Redeemer has been supportive of Partner for Surgery since its beginnings with financial assistance, service on the Board of Directors, and with medical and other volunteers.
Partner for Surgery was featured in the July, 2003 issue of The Lutheran Magazine and has had matching grants through Thrivent. Frank and Todd have spoken several times at Redeemer’s Adult Forums and Frank has spoken at Global Mission Events.
